An ancient temple said to have been founded by Takeda Shingen during the Battle of Kawanakajima, when he relocated the principal image of Zenkoji Temple from Shinano to protect it from the ravages of war. The main hall, constructed in the shotoki style, is one of eastern Japan's largest wooden structures and is designated as a National Treasure along with the temple gate. The ceiling in the center of the main hall features a "singing dragon"—when you clap your hands, a mysterious resonant echo returns, captivating visitors of all ages. Below the main hall, the underground corridor for spiritual enlightenment plunges into complete darkness; visitors touch the sacred lock before the principal image to form a spiritual connection.

Tips

Admission to the main hall and treasure museum is charged (around 500 yen for adults). The underground corridor is genuinely dark and requires feeling your way through, so those uncomfortable with darkness should prepare mentally. From Takeda Shrine, it's about a 10-minute drive; by bus, transferring at Kofu Station is the clearest route. The grounds are expansive with stone-paved and gravel paths, so wear comfortable shoes.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. Morning visits see fewer tour groups, allowing you to leisurely experience the singing dragon.
