Visit Karuizawa's oldest church and enjoy a quiet moment in the woodland

About this spot

Connected to missionary A.C. Shaw, who developed Karuizawa as a summer retreat, this is said to be Karuizawa's oldest church. A modest wooden chapel stands quietly in the woods at the far end of Kyū-Karuizawa Ginza Street. Just one step away from the bustling street, the atmosphere transforms—bird songs resound in peaceful silence. Visitors can view the interior, where the humble, warm atmosphere soothes the spirit.

Tips

Free admission. During worship services or special events, entry to the interior may be restricted, so visit respectfully. Located just a short walk from the end of Kyū-Karuizawa Ginza Street, it's easy to stop by during your food-walking tour. The woodland stays cool even in summer, so bringing a light layer is recommended.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. Afternoon dappled sunlight is particularly beautiful.
