About this spot
An art museum with a design that blends into the greenery, standing in the same Joyama Park (城山公園) as the zoo. In addition to a collection exhibition centered on works depicting Shinshu landscapes, the adjoining Higashiyama Kaii Gallery lets you take your time appreciating serene, masterful landscape paintings. The building itself is a highlight too - its waterside landscaping and open rooftop terrace are relaxing spaces you can walk through even without entering the museum. From the terrace, you can take in a sweeping view of Zenkoji's great roof, the city of Nagano, and the mountains beyond, a fitting sight to close out the day.
Tips
The collection exhibition costs around 700 yen for adults (special exhibitions are priced separately), and it's free for high school students and younger, making it welcoming for families. There are also many areas you can enjoy for free, such as the rooftop terrace and community spaces, so if the kids get tired of the exhibits, heading out to the waterside is a good option. Strollers are welcome inside, and the museum has elevators throughout. There's also a cafe, so you can take a breather when you're tired of walking.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours. In the late afternoon, when the sun is low in the west, the view from the rooftop terrace is especially beautiful.
