Located in a corner of Shiroyama Park, just east of Zenko-ji, this free-admission zoo is perfectly scaled for families. You'll encounter adorable waddling Humboldt penguins, agile sea lions gliding through pools, Japanese monkeys, ponies, guinea pigs, and more—all at a comfortable viewing distance for children. Vintage carnival rides and attractions add to the appeal, letting visitors enjoy both animal viewing and rides in one stop. The compact size means even small children won't tire during a full circuit, making it an ideal complement to a Zenko-ji visit.
Tips
Admission is free; rides cost a few hundred yen each. It's a 10-minute walk from Zenko-ji and stroller-accessible throughout. Benches are available but the concession stand is small, so bring drinks. Opening hours and closures vary seasonally—check in advance.
