An art museum in Obuse that houses a collection of original paintings by the aging Katsushika Hokusai, who spent his final years here. While Hokusai is known for his woodblock prints, here you'll encounter hanging scrolls and folding screens painted in his hand—works of remarkable maturity from his later years. The highlight is "Raging Waves" (怒濤図) painted on the ceiling of a festival float; viewers of all ages catch their breath at the dynamic swirling waves. The exhibition space is compact and well-organized, making it an ideal size for a museum debut.

Tips

Strollers are allowed inside and lockers are available. The museum is quiet right after opening, allowing for peaceful viewing without tour groups. Check at the counter for set tickets with the Takaikozan Memorial Hall or combined tickets with nearby facilities.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The late morning, right after opening, is less crowded and more comfortable
