Visiting the study and works of Takaikozan, the wealthy merchant who brought Hokusai to Obuse
About this spot
A memorial hall that opens the former residence of Takaikozan, a wealthy merchant and cultural figure of the late Edo period. Kozan was the patron who invited the aging Hokusai to Obuse, and their exchange brought the flower of art to this town. Period buildings remain, including the study "Shoshen-ro," and the unique yokai paintings and calligraphy created by Kozan himself are impressive. Just a short walk from the Hokusai Museum, visiting both gives a much fuller picture of Obuse's story.
Tips
Due to the historic nature of the buildings, there are some steps and steep stairs; it's safer to remove your stroller at the entrance and carry your child. It's only a 2-3 minute walk from the Hokusai Museum, making it easy to move around even on rainy days.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Morning visits combined with the Hokusai Museum are recommended
