Pay respects at the sacred kagura hall with its magnificent great sacred rope and complete your visit to both shrines

About this spot

One of the two Lower Shrines of Suwa Grand Shrine, located in the town of Shimo-Suwa on the north side of Lake Suwa. The kagura hall facing the shrine is a magnificent structure with a great sacred rope reminiscent of Izumo Grand Shrine, and its impressive scale will make you pause in awe. The bronze guardian lions (komainu) on both sides and the sacred tree known as the "Root-Rooted Cryptomeria" are also highlights. By visiting both this shrine and the Upper Shrine Honmiya in the morning, you'll have thoroughly paid your respects to the Suwa deity and can complete your day with a sense of fulfillment.

Tips

Free parking available. The area in front of the shrine retains the character of an old Nakasendo post town and is perfect for souvenir shopping, such as traditional salt-flavored sponge cakes. Arrive with plenty of time before the shrine stamp office closes. The grounds are flat and easy to walk.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. In the evening, there are fewer visitors, allowing for a quiet, leisurely walk through the grounds
