Walk through the forest nature trail and observe wild Japanese macaques up close gathered near the hot spring
About this spot
A world-famous park in a valley hot spring area where you can observe wild Japanese macaques up close without barriers. Children and adults alike become captivated watching the macaques grooming their fur in the mist of the hot spring or young monkeys playing around. From the parking area, it's about a 30-minute one-way walk along a tree-lined nature trail, offering a taste of light hiking. The closeness to the monkeys is a unique experience you can only have here.
Tips
Baby strollers are not allowed on the trail, so a baby carrier is essential. Rules to follow: do not touch the macaques, do not show them food, and do not stare directly into their eyes. In winter, wear non-slip shoes as the trail becomes slippery.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours required (including round-trip trail). The morning time slot allows relatively leisurely observation.
