About this spot

A bowl-shaped cirque carved by glaciers approximately 20,000 years ago. The name derives from the spacious area being equivalent to spreading a thousand tatami mats, and the stunning contrast between the rugged rocky walls of Hokken Peak and the verdant landscape at your feet is breathtaking. The walking trail is approximately a 40-minute loop, with the mountain peaks reflected in Tsurugi Pond creating ideal photography spots. In summer, the cirque blooms with alpine flowers; by early autumn, it transforms into a landscape of fall colors. The adjacent Hotel Senjojiki allows you to enjoy meals and refreshments while taking in the spectacular views.

Tips

At 2,612 meters elevation, even in midsummer it feels cool, so layering is essential. The walking trail is well-maintained but has rocks and elevation changes, so wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. At high altitude, walk slowly rather than running to prevent altitude sickness. The cost is an estimate for hotel lunch.

Best time to visit

Total time approximately 3 hours. Morning hours typically offer clearer views without cloud cover.
