View the Magnificent Real Festival Floats of the Takayama Festival Up Close
About this spot
Located in the grounds of Sakurayama Hachimangu, this exhibition hall displays the actual festival floats from the autumn Takayama Festival year-round—a rare opportunity to view them up close. Called "the moving Yōmeimōn Gate" (Kyoto's famous ornate gate), these floats dazzle with intricate carvings, metal fittings, and lacquer work on a scale that takes your breath away. Floats rotate in the displays, so each visit offers different floats to discover. Combined with exhibits capturing the festival's energy, you can fully appreciate the masterwork of Hida artisans.
Tips
Your admission ticket also includes the adjacent Sakurayama Nikko Hall (displaying a detailed model of Nikko Tōshōgū). The indoor venue is ideal for rainy or hot days and makes a great finale. Visiting after prayer is efficient.
Best time to visit
