Touching the Original Manuscripts and Life Story of Shimozaki Fujimura at the Memorial Museum Built on the Former Main Inn Site

About this spot

A memorial museum built on the site of the former main inn and birthplace of the writer Shimozaki Fujimura. The great novel "Before the Dawn" (夜明け前), known for its opening line "The Kiso Road runs entirely through mountains," is set in Magome. The museum displays original manuscripts, first editions, and personal belongings, allowing you to quietly trace Fujimura's life and literary world. The calm building surrounding an inner courtyard has an elegant appearance befitting a literary museum, providing a space to take a breath away from the bustle of the station.

Tips

Located midway up the slope of Magome Station, you can easily stop by while walking the streets. Note that photography is prohibited in some areas of the museum for preservation purposes, so follow the signage. For literature lovers, it's recommended to allow extra time to carefully read the audio guides and explanatory panels.
