Conclude with Historical Romance at Sumomata Ichiya Castle, Legendary Site of Hideyoshi's Success

About this spot

A historic site in Sumomata, famous for the legend that young Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a fortification here in a single night—a tale of his rise to power. The stately castle-like building now houses a history museum with displays tracing the legend of Ichiya Castle and Hideyoshi's path to success. From the top floor, you can enjoy a leisurely view of the Nagara River and Nobi Plain, experiencing the history of Sumomata as a place tied to rivers. The white figure standing on the riverside embankment is beautifully picturesque, perfect for commemorative photos to conclude your day.

Tips

About 20 minutes by car from central Ogaki, with free parking available. The museum focuses on displays, which history-loving children enjoy even more if you frame the displays as a quiz about Hideyoshi's rise. The embankment path is famous for its spring cherry blossoms, but offers pleasant riverside walks year-round. Closing time is early, so it's best to arrive in the early afternoon for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes required. The early evening hour with soft light captures beautiful photos of the castle by the riverbank.
