From the hilltop observatory tower, take in a panoramic view of Atami's streetscape and Sagami Bay
About this spot
A tower-shaped observation facility built atop Nishikigaura mountain. Though not an actual historical castle but rather a tourist attraction built in the Showa era, its vistas are exceptional. From the top-floor observation deck, you can see the crescent coastline, Sunbeach, the hot spring town streets, and Hatsu Island (初島) floating in Sagami Bay in a single panoramic sweep. The interior features exhibits related to Edo culture and samurai heritage, as well as a ukiyo-e print gallery, offering plenty to enjoy even on rainy days. The view at sunset, with the town and sea bathed in soft evening light, is a romantic finale to your day.
Tips
General admission is approximately 1,100 yen. Access from Atami Station (熱海駅) or the town center by bus or taxi is convenient; the continuous uphill slopes make walking not recommended. The observation terrace can be windy, so a light layer is advisable. Closing times vary by season, so confirm operating hours before heading up.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Late afternoon before sunset is ideal—the light becomes soft and the views of sea and town are at their most beautiful.
