Panoramic Views of Shimoda Harbor from Nesugatayama Summit and a Visit to Aizendō Temple for Matchmaking Blessings

About this spot

A ropeway departing from just beside Izu Kyū Shimoda Station that ascends Nesugatayama, named after its resemblance to a reclining woman. After a delightful 3.5-minute aerial walk, you'll reach the summit's observation deck with sweeping views of Shimoda Harbor and the Izu Sea. The summit area features Aizendō Temple (愛染堂), known for matchmaking blessings, as well as the remnants of a lookout post said to have been used to watch for Black Ships during the late-Edo period—perfect for history-loving couples. The well-maintained walking trails allow for leisurely strolls while taking in the spectacular views.

Tips

The station entrance serves as the boarding point, making it easily accessible by train. Round-trip tickets are the standard option, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the summit trails. Early morning visits offer clearer skies and beautiful sea views.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Going early avoids crowds and provides crystal-clear views from the observation deck.
