About this spot

A nationally designated historic temple known as the site of late-Edo period treaty negotiations with Commodore Perry's fleet. The temple grounds form a tranquil space that preserves the history of Japan's opening to the West, and are affectionately called the "Jasmine Temple" (ジャスミン寺) when American jasmine flowers bloom in early summer. The adjacent Black Ship Museum houses extensive collections of materials related to Black Ships and Perry, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts. By combining a temple visit with the museum exhibits, you can truly experience the story of the opening.

Tips

Temple grounds can be visited free of charge, while the Black Ship Museum requires admission. Located about 10 minutes' walk from Izu Kyū Shimoda Station, it's best visited alongside Perry Road. Bring small coins if you'd like to receive a temple stamp (goshuin).

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour. Morning visits are quieter with fewer tour groups, allowing for peaceful worship.
