About this spot

A charming 700-meter pathway along the Hirakatsura River (平滑川) where Commodore Perry's procession is said to have marched toward Ryōsenji Temple. The streetscape features stone pavements and swaying willows, complemented by traditional namako-wall structures and buildings made of Izu stone—making it Shimoda's most photogenic spot. Vintage cafés and souvenir shops housed in restored old buildings are scattered throughout the area, offering constant temptations to stop and explore. A lunch break overlooking the river's reflection of the streetscape is sure to be a highlight of your date.

Tips

Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for stone pavement. Popular cafés tend to fill up during lunch hours, so arriving early or choosing an off-peak time is recommended. The pathway narrows in some sections beside the river, so watch for oncoming foot traffic.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The late morning to early afternoon is ideal for leisurely enjoying café lunch and shopping.
