An ancient temple said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi during the Heian period, and the namesake of Shuzenji Onsen. Located at the precise center of the hot spring town, this temple serves as the starting point for exploring the hot spring village. Its hand-washing basin fed by hot spring water is its signature feature—the unique experience of cleansing your hands in pleasantly warm water is found nowhere else. The temple also holds historical significance as a stage in the history of the Kamakura shogunate, and its treasure hall displays cultural properties passed down through the temple. The serene grounds surrounded by quiet woods offer a particularly special experience when walked through in the clear morning air.
Tips
Temple grounds are free to enter (treasure hall requires admission of approximately 300 yen). There are stone steps leading to the temple gate, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Located at the center of the hot spring town, it's just a few minutes' walk to the Takkoku-no-Yu and Bamboo Grove Path, making it ideal as a starting point for exploration. Parking is limited in the surrounding area, so arriving early in the morning is recommended if driving.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Arriving before 9 a.m. means fewer crowds, allowing you to savor the quiet temple grounds at your own pace.
