About this spot

A steaming hot spring rising from a sandbar in the Katsura River, and the symbol of Shuzenji Onsen. An ancient legend tells how Kobo Daishi struck a riverside rock with his one-pronged tantric implement (takkoku), and a sacred spring burst forth—said to be Izu's oldest hot spring. While bathing is no longer permitted and viewing only is available, the small bathhouse standing in the middle of the river with its hot spring steam creates the most photogenic scene of the entire hot spring town. Vermillion bridges line the surroundings, and together with the river's murmur, you can fully savor the charm of a traditional hot spring village. A free footbath is available on the nearby riverbank, perfect for a brief rest during your walk.

Tips

Viewing is free, and it's recommended to enjoy the sight from the riverside promenade or bridges. The stone-paved paths can be slippery in places, so watch your footing. Bringing a towel is convenient if you plan to use the nearby footbath. Each bridge spanning the Katsura River is named after a romantic legend, making bridge-hopping an enjoyable activity in itself.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. The morning light creates beautiful reflections on the river's steam.
