Walk through a tunnel of green bamboo and recline on a large bamboo bench while gazing up at the sky
About this spot
A signature walking path of Shuzenji Onsen that runs alongside the Katsura River. A stone-paved path winds through towering green bamboo that arches overhead, with a large circular bamboo bench positioned in the center. Sit or recline on the bench and look upward—light filters through the bamboo leaves creating a breathtaking scene, and with each breeze, the rustling of bamboo leaves resonates soothingly. Blended with the vermillion bridge and the river's gentle flow, this landscape epitomizes the essence of Shuzenji's reputation as "Izu's Little Kyoto." Though a short path, it's a place where you'll find yourself pausing again and again to capture photographs.
Tips
The path is free to walk through, and the route from the Takkoku-no-Yu side toward Kaede Bridge following the riverside is easy to navigate. Stone-paved surfaces can be slippery after rain, so mind your footing. The circular bench is popular, so visiting in the morning when it's less crowded is your best bet. At night, the path is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere quite different from daytime.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Morning light avoids backlighting, and the bamboo green appears most vibrant.
