A venerable temple dating back to the Heian period, situated on the slopes of Tatsutagawa, a small mountain extending into Lake Hamana. Known for its power to grant blessings in love and matchmaking, the temple sees a constant flow of visitors praying for their family's health. Beyond the main hall stands a large Avalokiteshvara Statue watching over the lake, and from the walking paths encircling the mountain, you can behold the sparkling waters of Lake Hamana in their entirety. A perfect spot to combine a temple visit with a leisurely lakeside stroll—the symbolic landmark of the Tatsutagawa Temple Onsen area.

Tips

Admission is free. The mountain's walking paths include slopes and stone steps, so comfortable hiking shoes and a baby carrier are safer than a stroller. The Tatsutagawa Temple Onsen street at the base is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops; after your visit, lunch on the main street where you can enjoy Hamamatsu's famous eel dishes is recommended.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour. It flows smoothly to transition to lunch on the main street afterwards.
