A relocated and restored residence where Kawakami Sadako, known as "Japan's first actress," and power magnate Fukuzawa Momosuke lived during the Taisho era. The striking exterior features an orange-tile roof and white walls, and upon entering, visitors are greeted by a grand hall adorned with a spiral staircase and vividly colored stained glass. The unified Japanese and Western architectural design was cutting-edge for its time, and each room offers its own distinctive character. This is a fitting place to conclude the historical narrative of "Culture Lane" that continues from Nagoya Castle through Tokugawa Garden.

Tips

Admission is an affordable 200 yen per adult. From the Tokugawa Garden area, travel via bus or taxi is most convenient. During times close to closing, the venue is less crowded, and you may find yourself alone admiring the stained glass in the grand hall. Historic structures such as the former Toyoda Sasuke residence are scattered throughout the surrounding area, so taking time for a neighborhood stroll is recommended if you have the time.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. Late afternoon is a beautiful time when light filters through the stained glass.
