An art museum housing one of Japan's finest daimyo family collections—the feudal lord furnishings passed down through generations of the Owari Tokugawa family. From swords and armor symbolizing the warrior class, to tea utensils and Noh costumes conveying status, to the wedding furnishings of the lords' daughters, each exhibition room is themed to allow visitors to trace the life of the daimyo chronologically. The museum is renowned for housing the National Treasure "The Tale of Genji Scroll," and the number and quality of masterpieces on display is truly overwhelming. Situated adjacent to Tokugawa Garden, visiting both together is the standard course.
Tips
A combined ticket with Tokugawa Garden is a good value. Since exhibits rotate, if you're interested in a specific work, check the exhibition schedule in advance. The museum has ample lockers and a well-stocked museum shop. It connects to the exhibition room of the adjacent Hohoku Library, so if you plan to view thoroughly, reserve at least 1.5 hours.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours. In the afternoon, fewer tour groups are present, allowing for quieter appreciation.
