Japan's largest open-air museum preserving relocated historic buildings from the Meiji era. Over 60 heritage structures—including the Imperial Hotel Central Entrance designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, churches, and post offices—line the hillside. Riding the steam locomotive or Kyoto streetcar (京都市電) through the village makes the journey itself feel like a time travel experience. With Meiji-era cuisine, costume experiences, and more, retro enthusiasts can easily spend half a day here without getting bored.
Tips
Admission is around ¥2,500 for adults; SL and streetcar tickets are sold separately, so check for ride tickets at the entrance. The grounds are hilly, so utilizing the in-park bus and ramps is recommended for strollers. The signature street food is least crowded in the morning.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 3.5 hours. Early morning right after opening, the SL has shorter queues and is easier to board.
