About this spot

Built during the Meiji period and used for firing pottery until the mid-Showa era, this climbing kiln boasts Japan's largest scale among existing structures. Firing chambers connected along a slope with chimneys of varying heights rising toward the sky present an awe-inspiring sight. Designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, the reddish-brown brick texture and the kiln's smoke-darkened surface bear witness to the history of the pottery town. Be sure to feel the power of where pottery is born, up close and personal.

Tips

Admission is free and can be viewed freely from outside. The sight of chimneys lined up is easier to photograph from a distance. Located along the pottery walking trail route; many slopes in the surrounding area, so wear comfortable shoes.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30-45 minutes. Afternoon light warms the brick colors beautifully.
