About this spot
An arcade shopping street about 180 meters long extending south from Tsutenkaku, officially named Nanyo-dori Shopping Street. Along the narrow roughly 3-meter-wide alley are tightly packed skewered fried food stalls, standing bars, old-fashioned coffee shops, and go/shogi clubs, preserving the very air of Showa-era Osaka. The specialty is freshly fried skewered food. The house rule at the sauce counter is "no double-dipping," and the style of munching on cabbage while ordering skewers one after another is a proper Osaka food culture experience for children. There are many options from popular established shops with long lines to family-friendly restaurants, and simply strolling through the alley afterward is enjoyable.
Tips
Right at the exit of Osaka Metro Dōbutsuenmae Station, and about 5 minutes' walk from Tsutenkaku. Popular skewered fried food shops have lines during lunch, so after 1:00 PM is relatively smoother. Since the passage is narrow, it's safer to fold up strollers. Many shops remain cash-only, so having small change ready makes payment smooth.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. 1:00 PM or later is less crowded.
