About this spot

Just south of glittering neon Dotonbori, a lane about 80 meters long with stone pavement and lantern light preserves an evocative atmosphere. Known as the setting for Sakuzo Oda's novel "Husband and Wife Sweets" (夫婦善哉), the lane is lined with upscale eateries and grilled skewer restaurants. The Mizukake Fudo (water-pouring Fudo statue) in one corner is entirely covered in green moss because visitors have been pouring water with ladles while praying—a wonderfully auspicious sight. After praying, rest at a dessert shop in the lane and enjoy the famous zenzai. The contrast between this quiet atmosphere and the hustle of Minami nearby is an experience unique to this food-hopping course.

Tips

A 5-minute walk from Namba (なんば) Station, just south of Dotonbori's bustling area. The tradition is to pour water on Mizukake Fudo with a ladle; bring small change for offerings. The stone pavement lane is narrow, so avoid spreading out in a group while walking. At night, it becomes an adult-oriented area with fine dining and bars, so daytime to early evening is better for casual strolling and sweet breaks.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon when some daylight remains is best for leisurely praying and enjoying sweets.
