About this spot
The colossal billboard of a runner with both arms raised crossing the finish line has remained the symbol and face of Dotonbori since the original was installed in 1935. The current sixth-generation sign features LED technology with switching background images after sunset—a sight worth seeing. Taking a commemorative photo from Ebisu Bridge (戎橋) in the same pose in front of the billboard is the quintessential Osaka sightseeing photo; the bridge is always crowded with camera-wielding visitors. After a day of eating, laughing, and walking, a final photo of all your friends striking the runner pose is definitely a trip highlight. The ribbon of neon lights along Dotonbori River viewed from the riverside promenade is beautiful and perfect for a closing stroll.
Tips
A 3-minute walk from Exit 14 of Midosuji Line Namba (なんば) Station, at the base of Ebisu Bridge. The bridge is always crowded; descending to the riverside promenade Tonbori Riverwalk (とんぼりリバーウォーク) makes it easier to avoid crowds and get the full sign in your frame. Neon lights turn on around sunset. In crowds, watch your phone and wallet closely, and be courteous while taking photos.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 30 minutes. Late afternoon to sunset when neon lights turn on is ideal for photography.
