A national art museum specializing in contemporary art, it opened in 1977 at the Expo 70 Park Memorial before relocating to Nakanoshima in 2004. Unusual worldwide, this "fully underground" museum has all exhibition spaces below ground; above, a silver object designed by architect César Pelli—inspired by the vitality of bamboo—reaches skyward as a landmark. Extending three floors underground, the museum houses core collections of approximately 8,000 contemporary artworks from around the globe and hosts internationally diverse exhibitions and thematic presentations. Even seemingly complex contemporary art becomes engaging when discussed between two people as you walk—conversation naturally flourishes. Closing a day that began with Taisho-era architecture at its finest by concluding with cutting-edge art is a sophisticated finale.
Tips
Located immediately west of the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum, accessible in 1–2 minutes on foot. Viewing the collection exhibition alone is affordable at 430 yen for general admission, and combining it with special exhibitions is also recommended. The museum extends evening hours on Fridays and Saturdays; check the official website for operating hours if you wish to linger. Coin lockers are available for storing belongings.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Late afternoon is relatively peaceful, and the return journey can transition into a riverside sunset stroll.
