About this spot
A shrine quietly situated in a corner of Umeda's office district, commonly known as "Ohatsu Tenjin." It was the setting for Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater masterpiece "The Love Suicides at Sonezaki," and named after the main characters Ohatsu and Tokubei from the story, it is beloved as a sacred spot for lovers and a shrine for matchmaking. The grounds feature bronze statues of the couple, love fortunes, and heart-shaped wooden plaques, with couples constantly coming to pray for romantic fulfillment. The shrine is said to have been established over 1,300 years ago and is a historic shrine; stepping into the grounds surrounded by high-rise buildings, you'll feel the atmosphere change subtly. Located at the end of the bustling Ohatsu Tenjin-dori Shopping Street, it's charming because you can easily drop by while exploring Umeda.
Tips
About a 3-minute walk from Tanimachi Line Higashi-Umeda Station; about 5 minutes from various Umeda stations. It's located at the end of Ohatsu Tenjin-dori Shopping Street heading south. Worship is free, and love fortunes and heart-shaped wooden plaques start from just a few hundred yen. From evening onward, lanterns are lit, offering a different atmosphere from daytime.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Visiting in the late afternoon while still bright allows for a calm and peaceful worship experience
