Japan's largest keyhole-shaped burial mound with a mound length of approximately 486 meters, representing the UNESCO World Heritage Mozu and Furuichi Kofun Clusters. Believed to have been constructed around the 5th century, it ranks among the world's largest tombs alongside Egypt's pyramids and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in China. Standing at the worship site, beyond three layers of moats lies a densely forested mound stretching so far you cannot see from end to end—three generations together will surely be overwhelmed by its immensity. The keyhole shape familiar from aerial textbook photos is invisible from ground level, but therein lies the charm of this place: you can experience "just how vast it is" with your own feet and eyes. A place where grandfather and grandmother's stories naturally connect with a child's "why?", making it the perfect starting point for a historical walk.
Tips
About 8 minutes on foot from JR Hanwa Line Mozu Station. Volunteer guides often offer explanations around the worship site, and child-friendly explanations can be requested. The loop path circling the moats is about 2.8 km and takes about 1 hour, so three generations can get by with just the worship site and the front area. Since there is little shade, don't forget a hat and beverages.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. Early morning with fewer people makes the worship site quiet, and the moats and trees appear crisp and green.
