Learn About the Kofun Era Enjoyably Through the Mozu Cluster Theater and Exhibits

About this spot

A municipal museum in Daisen Park where you can comprehensively learn about Sakai's history and culture. The highlight is a large-screen theater showcasing the Mozu Kofun Cluster, where the aerial view of the complete keyhole-shaped burial mounds prompts families to exclaim, "So that's what the kofun we just stood before looks like!" The permanent exhibits trace Sakai's history from clay figurines and burial goods of the Kofun era through the autonomous merchant city flourishing in medieval overseas trade, to the history of Sakai's manufacturing traditions—swordsmithing and blade-making—all in one sweeping narrative. The 200-yen admission for adults is also a welcome detail. By complementing the mound views unavailable from the worship site with the complete kofun image here, your morning walk becomes three-dimensional. It's a multigenerational museum where grandchildren and grandparents enjoy conversations while viewing the same exhibits.

Tips

About 6 minutes on foot from JR Mozu Station, located near the center of Daisen Park. Closed Mondays (open if a national holiday), so check the day. Theater screenings have set times, so confirm the next showing time at the reception when you enter for smooth planning. The inside is flat and can be viewed with a stroller in place; coin lockers are available.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Before noon has fewer tour groups, allowing leisurely enjoyment of both theater and exhibits.
