Stroll Through Historic Meiji-Era Pine Groves; Children's Train and Traffic Park Popular with All

About this spot

Established in Meiji 6 (1873), this prefectural park is counted among Japan's oldest public parks. Its approximately 5,500 pine trees, selected as one of "100 Famous Pine Forests" (名松100選), create a landscape that has enchanted visitors for generations. At the traffic park (交通遊園) within the grounds, the children's train and go-karts are hugely popular, racing through the pine groves. Riding the chugging train with a grandchild on your lap offers a highlight moment for your three-generation journey. Spacious playgrounds with large equipment and grassy areas keep active children entertained. At the park's entrance stands the preserved Meiji 40 (1907) former Hamadera Park Station, designed by Tatsuno Kingo's (辰野金吾) office (the same architect who designed Tokyo Station)—its charming wooden structure evokes the romance of travel. Its convenient location just steps from the Hankai Tram's final stop makes it a perfect way to cap off your leisurely streetcar adventure.

Tips

Steps away from Hankai Tram's final stop at Hamadera Station-mae (浜寺駅前駅); also about a 3-minute walk from Nankai Main Line's Hamadera Park (浜寺公園) station. The children's train and go-karts operate on a per-ride ticket basis with limited operating days and hours—check the traffic park ticket booth upon arrival. The park is vast; focusing on the main entrance area and traffic park keeps the three-generation experience manageable. Park paths are flat and comfortable for strollers.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Early afternoon when the children's train is running is recommended.
