Board the retro romantic train and enjoy the scenic gorge views of Hozu through the train windows

About this spot

The starting station of the Sagano Scenic Railway romantic train, located right next to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. Sway along in retro wooden passenger cars and slowly traverse the Hozu Gorge, approximately 7.3 km from Saga to Kameoka, over about 25 minutes. The sweeping gorge views through the windows and the flow of the Hozu River below are breathtaking. Car No. 5, 'The Richie,' is an open-air car without window glass—a premium seat where you can feel the wind on your cheeks. Children who love vehicles will have racing hearts even before boarding. The 19th Century Hall attached to the station features real steam locomotives and offers free admission, so you can enjoy the waiting time before departure. Experience the changing faces of the gorge with the seasons—cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage in fall—through the train windows with your whole family.

Tips

Adjacent to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station with excellent access. All seats are reserved, so it's reassuring to book the popular early-morning train in advance. The line closes during winter (January and February), and Wednesday closures are frequent, so check the operating calendar beforehand. Fold strollers and bring them inside the train.

Best time to visit

Approximately 40 minutes total (about 25 minutes riding). Recommended to depart on the early-morning train for easier seating
