Enjoy approximately 2 hours of river descent guided by skillful boatmen, cheering at the splashing rapids
About this spot
A river descent spanning over 400 years, continuing the legacy of water transportation opened by Ryoei Sumitsuji in 1606 (Keicho 11). Descend approximately 16 km of the Hozu Gorge from the Kameoka boarding point to Arashiyama over about 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Three boatmen skillfully operate poles, oars, and rudders, navigating through narrows and entertaining with lively commentary—the boat fills with laughter. At the fast-moving rapids, water splashes up and children cheer with delight. On gentler stretches, enjoy the gorge beauty leisurely from water level. The unique charm of this course is experiencing the same gorge you viewed from above on the train now from the water below. Everyone wears life jackets, so families with children can enjoy safely.
Tips
From Torocco Kameoka Station to the boarding point takes about 15 minutes by shuttle bus (about 10 minutes walk from JR Kameoka Station). On weekends and during autumn foliage season, advance reservations are recommended to avoid wait times. The rapids splash water, so bring towels, extra clothes for children, and waterproof protection for phones. There are no restrooms on the boat, so use facilities before boarding.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. Taking the morning boat after exiting the train allows arrival in Arashiyama in early afternoon for a smooth itinerary
