Stroll through a tunnel of verdant bamboo in dappled light—the perfect way to close out your day
About this spot
A stroll path approximately 400 meters long, from Nonomiya Shrine to near the entrance of Okochi Sanso Villa Garden, representing the quintessential Arashiyama walk. Tall bamboo reaching skyward creates a tunnel on both sides, and as the breeze blows, the rustling of leaves drifts softly. Dappled sunlight filtering through the bamboo changes character with the time of day, creating an ever-picturesque landscape at every step. The bamboo remains beautifully green year-round, and even in summer, a refreshing coolness pervades. Following a full day of gorge scenery via train and boat, close your day with a leisurely walk through this green tunnel. The distance is manageable even for children. Nonomiya Shrine along the way is an ancient shrine associated with The Tale of Genji; it's recommended to pass through its rare black torii gate and pay respects.
Tips
Exiting Tenryu-ji's north gate connects directly to the path without backtracking. The path is a gently sloped paved route passable with strollers, but daytime traffic is considerable—proceed slowly while being considerate of others. In the evening, crowds thin out and photography becomes easier. The walk back to Randen Arashiyama Station or JR Saga-Arashiyama Station is about 10 minutes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Evening sees fewer crowds, and the slanting light creates the most beautiful dappled sunlight
