The head temple of the Rinzai Tenryu-ji school, founded in 1339 by Takauji Ashikaga to honor the memory of Emperor Go-Daigo, and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site under 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.' The highlight is the Sogenchi Pond Garden designed by Soami Musou. This grand pond-and-strolling-style garden incorporates Arashiyama and Kameyama as borrowed scenery, preserving the landscape from approximately 700 years ago. The garden can be enjoyed while walking along the designated path, making it accessible even for children who find sitting still difficult. Look for carp in the pond or spot seasonal flowers as your family strolls leisurely. Whether visiting for spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, or autumn foliage, you'll encounter the garden's starring role in beauty every season.
Tips
About 1 minute walk from Randen Arashiyama Station, and about 5 minutes walk from Togetsukyo Bridge. Garden viewing is ¥500 for high school students and above, ¥300 for elementary and middle school students; viewing temple buildings requires separate admission. The garden is mainly graveled paths but accessible with strollers. Exiting through the north gate connects directly to the bamboo grove path for a smooth transition to the next destination.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. After 2 PM when tour groups begin leaving, viewing becomes more peaceful
