A Shingon Buddhist temple reportedly founded in Genroku 12 (1699) when Fushimi magistrate Masao Takebe developed Nakashojima, enshrining Benzaiten, the goddess of music and fortune—a rare presence in Kyoto. The vermillion-painted earthen wall and dragon-palace-style gate are striking, and passing through the gate, you're enveloped in a unique atmosphere where Japanese tradition blends with exotic elements. The canal path directly in front features willow trees and stone paving—a quintessentially Fushimi stroll, with the sight of tourist Jukkokufune boats passing leisurely. The scenery, reflecting cherry blossoms and white-walled storehouses on the water's surface, changes with each season, delighting photography enthusiasts. Concluding your town walk with a quiet prayer at this temple and taking an evening stroll as sunset reflects on the water creates a lingering, refined atmosphere for the day.
Tips
Just a 3-minute walk from Keihan Main Line Nakashojima Station—convenient even on your way back. The grounds are free to visit and compact enough to enjoy fully in a short time. The canal path in front of the gate is beautiful in evening light. From spring through autumn, the Jukkokufune boat tour operates from a nearby boarding point, and combining a tour with your visit is wonderful.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Early evening when the setting sun colors the canal is the most picturesque time to combine with a willow-lined stroll.
