Pay respects to the wisdom Monju and savor the famous wisdom mochi at the temple gate
About this spot
This ancient temple is counted among the three great Monju temples of Japan alongside Abe Monju-in in Nara and Kameoka Monju in Yamagata. It has long been known as "Kiriedo Monju" and the "Wisdom Monju." Housing the Monju Bodhisattva who grants wisdom, it is famous for blessings on academic success, making it perfect for praying for your grandchildren's exam success or improvement in their studies. The temple grounds feature impressive structures such as a splendid main gate said to be the finest in the Tango region and a pagoda designated as a National Important Cultural Property, built during the Muromachi period. The sight of fan-shaped "ever-widening fan" oracle sticks hung abundantly on pine tree branches is a unique seasonal sight found only here. Outside the temple gate, shops selling the famous wisdom mochi line the street, and these simple mochi topped with red bean paste are a delightful treat for all three generations to enjoy at breakfast.
Tips
Located about a 5-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway, it serves as the gateway to Amanohashidate sightseeing. The grounds are flat and easy for those with strollers or limited mobility to visit. The wisdom mochi shops at the temple gate open from early morning, and payment is typically cash, so it's helpful to have small change ready. If driving, use the paid parking areas nearby.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Early morning visits offer a quiet temple atmosphere and freshly made wisdom mochi.
