View the Boathouses from the Sea on a Cruise and Enjoy the Popular Seagull Feeding

About this spot

Tango Kaichi Transportation operates this sightseeing cruise that circles Ine Bay in approximately 25 minutes. From the boat, you can see the approximately 230 boathouses lined up just above the water's surface—a view unique to this cruise, with an impact quite different from viewing from land. As the boat moves, seagulls and kites chase after it, and feeding them from the deck is a memorable part of the journey. With the sea breeze in your face and gazing at the boathouses together, you'll truly understand why this place is called the "Venice of Japan." Since the townscape has been designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, getting a preview from the sea before exploring the lanes on foot makes the afternoon walk all the more enjoyable.

Tips

Departing from Hidesshimbashi (日出桟橋) Pier, a 1-hour bus ride on Tango Kaichi Bus from Amanohashidate Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway. Boats depart at roughly 30-minute to 1-hour intervals and no reservation is needed. Shrimp crackers for feeding the seagulls are available at the ship's shop, but they sell out, so it's safer to buy them beforehand. The deck is windy, so secure your hat so it doesn't blow away.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes total (25 minutes aboard). An early morning departure is recommended when the sea is calm and the boat is not crowded.
