Flow of the course

About this spot

The stone-paved slope continuing from the approach to Kiyomizu Temple, designated as a nationally important traditional wooden architecture preservation district along with Nenzaka. This is Kyoto's most atmospheric streetscape, with historic townhouses lining the way. Browsing shops selling Kyoto crafts, fans, Japanese sweets, and Kiyomizu pottery while strolling down the slope is itself a highlight of your Kyoto date. Partway down the slope, Yasaka Pagoda (the five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple) appears beyond the rooflines, a famous photo spot reminiscent of a postcard. The slope has plenty of snacking treats and sweets cafés, and the ease of casually dropping into intriguing shops is part of its charm. From Kiyomizu Temple toward the Gion direction, this slope becomes more distinctly Kyoto with every step.

Tips

Just a short walk down Kiyomizu-zaka from Kiyomizu Temple, continuing on to Nenzaka and Nene's Path. Shops generally open around 10 a.m., so timing your visit here right after early morning Kiyomizu is perfect. Stone pavement can be slippery when wet; according to legend, tripping on Sannenzaka brings bad luck, so sneakers are recommended. The photo spot with Yasaka Pagoda begins to get crowded before noon, so photographing earlier is advisable.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Late morning around 10 a.m., when shops are just opening, still sees moderate crowds and offers good photo opportunities.
