Capture the perfect couple's photo alongside colorful monkey charms

Formally known as Taigokusan Kongoji Koshinji, this ancient temple is counted among Japan's three great Koshin shrines and is deeply connected to Koshin faith. The colorful cloth balls called "kukuri-zaru" (bound monkeys) filling the grounds are a charm symbolizing a monkey with bound hands and feet, with the prayer "if you give up one desire, your wish will come true." The sight of these multicolored monkeys swaying on strings is one of Kyoto's most photogenic spots and immensely popular. Though the grounds are small, this is a renowned photo location where couples in kimono pass through. Dedicating a kukuri-zaru inscribed with your wishes and making a prayer together as a couple is a perfect date keepsake. Located right beside Yasaka Pagoda, just off Sannenzaka, this is easily incorporated into your Higashiyama stroll.

Tips

About 5 minutes walk from Sannenzaka, immediately south of Yasaka Pagoda (Hokanji). Entry is free, with opening hours around 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each kukuri-zaru charm costs 500 yen and is cash-only, so bring small change. The grounds are very compact; queues for photos form around midday, so early morning is ideal. Photographing with the main temple's monkey charms as background captures the most vibrant colors.
