A Rinzai Zen temple of the Kenninji sect founded in 1606 by Yodo-dono (Nene), the principal wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to honor her late husband's memory. Known affectionately as "Nene's Temple," it offers continuous points of interest: the dry landscape garden "Hashin-tei" spreading before the main hall, the strolling garden centered on Garyu Pond, and the Garyu Corridor connecting the Kaisando and Mausoleum, where a bamboo grove path appears—a tranquil, healing space. The teahouses "Kasa-an" and "Shigure-an," said to have been moved from Fushimi Castle, are charming, allowing you both to savor the refined aesthetics of Azuchi-Momoyama culture. Renowned for spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, as well as seasonal evening illuminations, this is a celebrated temple where you'll want to linger during the afternoon of your Higashiyama exploration, away from the bustle of the crowded slopes.
Tips
Located along Nene's Path, which continues from Sannenzaka and Nenzaka, and within walking distance of Yasaka Shrine, making it easy to incorporate into your stroll. Admission is 600 yen for adults, which includes entry to Kodai-ji Museum of Fine Arts. The grounds have many stone steps and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. During cherry blossom and autumn foliage illumination periods, the site becomes crowded from evening onward; daytime visits allow for more relaxed viewing. Reception closes at 5:30 p.m. (times may vary by season).
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early afternoon, when there are fewer tour groups, allows you to peacefully stroll the gardens.
