Japan's largest-scale railway museum operated by the JR West Group, featuring over 50 actual train cars ranging from steam locomotives to the 500-series Shinkansen. For train-loving children, the sight is nothing short of a dream world. The fan-shaped train depot, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, houses historic steam locomotives in a row, and the popular "SL Steam Train" experience allows visitors to ride behind an actual steam locomotive. The museum is packed with engaging features you can see, touch, and learn from—including a meticulously detailed giant railway diorama, a driving simulator, and a sky terrace offering views of the Shinkansen and conventional trains. With its focus on indoor exhibits, it's less affected by weather, and features like a kids park and rest areas make it safe and fun for even small children to enjoy for a good half day.

Tips

Just a short train ride from Kyoto Station on the Sagano Line to Umekoji Kyoto-Nishi Station (or about a 20-minute walk from Kyoto Station). There's no dedicated parking lot, so using public transportation is recommended. The reception method for popular experiences like the driving simulator may change, so it's best to check the day's information upon entering the museum. Riding the SL Steam Train requires a separate fee in addition to admission. The museum floors are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller.
