The highlight is the Special Natural Monument Japanese giant salamander living in the "Kyoto River" zone. The massive creature swaying in the water will captivate children. More attractions follow—the waddling cape penguins, ringed seals poking their faces out of tubular tanks, and the "Jellyfish Wonder," Western Japan's largest jellyfish exhibit. The compact layout makes it easy for families with small children to complete a full circuit. There's also a relaxing space with large windows overlooking the green of Umekoji Park, perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
Tips
Located within Umekoji Park, about a 7-minute walk from Umekoji Kyoto-Nishi Station and just a short walk from the Kyoto Railway Museum. On weekend and holiday afternoons, entry lines can form, so it's recommended to purchase Web tickets in advance from the official website for a smooth entry. The facility has elevators and is fully navigable with a stroller. Washing hands after playing in the park before entering makes for a more pleasant visit.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours required. Right after opening or after 3 PM is relatively quiet and allows for a more leisurely experience.
