A historic temple and the head temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site under "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." Built around the time of the relocation to Heian-kyo, it has stood on this land for over 1,200 years. The symbol of the temple, the five-story pagoda, stands at approximately 55 meters tall and is the highest wooden pagoda in Japan. Impressive from every vantage point in the spacious grounds. The lecture hall features a three-dimensional mandala of Buddha statues representing the teachings of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism, and the solemn atmosphere naturally quiets children. The open, unobstructed grounds offer a calm and peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely family walk after an eventful day of museums and aquariums. The view of the five-story pagoda from along the moat is one of Kyoto's most iconic vistas.
Tips
About a 15-minute walk from the Kyoto Aquarium, or about a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Toji Station. Entry to the temple grounds is free; admission to view the Kondo (golden hall) and lecture hall areas is charged separately. The 21st of each month features the "Kobo Market" festival, which can be very crowded, so plan accordingly if you prefer a quiet walk. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour required. The five-story pagoda is most beautiful in the soft light of early evening.
