Cap Off the Day with a View of Kyoto at Twilight from the Observation Deck

About this spot

A 131-meter-tall landmark tower standing directly in front of the Karasumarucentral exit of Kyoto Station, it has watched over the city since 1964 as the tallest building in the urban area. From the observation deck at 100 meters above ground, visitors enjoy a 360-degree view of the city, perfect for pointing out Toji Temple's five-story pagoda and the Umekoji area where you've walked today. Complimentary binoculars are available. During twilight, enjoy views of the Kyoto basin painted in crimson tones and the Eastern Mountains, transforming into city lights at nightfall. Restaurants and souvenir shops cluster at the base of the tower, making it convenient to spend time before catching your return train—a fitting finale to the day.

Tips

Right in front of the Karasumarucental exit of Kyoto Station. About a 15-minute walk from Toji Temple, or accessible by city bus. Observation deck tickets are available for purchase on the first floor on the day of your visit, but the window area gets crowded during twilight hours. Arriving just before sunset is the ideal time. The building's basement and lower floors have a dining district, convenient if you want to grab dinner before heading home.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes required. Early evening around sunset, when the city glows amber, is highly recommended.
