Commemorative photo with the large tengu at the station, prepare yourself, and begin your mountain hike

About this spot

The terminal station of the Eizan Railway Kurama Line and the gateway to Kurama and Kibune hiking. The dignified station building, reminiscent of a temple main hall, retains its original appearance, and a large tengu monument with a long nose welcomes you at the station entrance. The tengu is Kurama's symbol, so commemorative photos here are a must. Inside the station, tengu masks are displayed, and the front section of an old Eizan Railway train is preserved beside the platform—a must-see for railway enthusiasts. The journey from Demachi-Masugata Shoiji is full of sights, and the "Maple Tunnel" between Ichihara and Ninose offers spectacular views with fresh greenery and autumn foliage filling the windows. As facilities become sparse once you enter the mountains, be sure to use the restroom and make preparations here before starting your mountain walk from this tengu village.

Tips

About 30 minutes by Eizan Railway from Keihan's Demachi-Masugata Shoiji Station; get off at the final stop. If you can board the scenic "Kirara" train with window-facing seats, you'll enjoy the Maple Tunnel even more. IC cards accepted. Since the mountain trail ahead has almost no restrooms or vending machines, be sure to take care of restroom needs and secure drinking water at the station.

Best time to visit

Allow about 20 minutes. If you arrive around 9 a.m., the station area will be less crowded and you can take photos with the large tengu at a leisurely pace.
