Pray for safe passage at the shrine with an 800-year-old giant cedar standing in Kurama
About this spot
This is the tutelary shrine of the Kurama village, located just past the Nio-mon Gate of Kurama-dera Temple along the winding stone steps. It is nationally known as the site of "Kurama Fire Festival," one of Kyoto's three strangest festivals, held every October. The worship hall, reportedly rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori, features the unusual "split-worship hall" design where the approach path passes through the center of the building and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Before the shrine stands the sacred tree "Great Cedar," approximately 800 years old and some 50 meters tall, reaching toward the heavens; it is said that sincere wishes made here come true. The impressive Great Cedar cannot be captured in a single photograph even when looking up—this majesty can only be experienced here. Offer prayers for safe passage on your mountain hike and build up your resolve for the serious climbing ahead.
Tips
About 3 minutes' walk from Kurama Station to the Nio-mon Gate of Kurama-dera Temple. At the gate, pay 500 yen for mountain entry, then walk about 10 minutes up the approach path to reach the shrine. Taking the cable car creates a route that bypasses Yuki Shrine, so if you wish to pay respects, be sure to choose the walking path. Stone steps and slopes continue, so wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Best time to visit
Allow about 30 minutes. Early morning sunlight filters through the Great Cedar, and there are fewer worshippers, making it peaceful.
