Climb the winding stone steps to the Main Hall and recharge with the mountain's energy at Kongō-bed

About this spot

An ancient temple on Kurama Mountain said to have been founded in 770 (Hōki 1), where Ushiwaka-maru (later the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune) is said to have learned swordsmanship from a tengu. As you steadily climb the winding approach path that Sei Shonagon called "near yet far" in her Pillow Book, a vermillion-lacquered Main Hall appears in the mountainside. The "Kongō-bed" in front of the main hall is said to be where cosmic energy descends and is Kurama Mountain's foremost power spot—the sight of visitors standing at its center, gazing upward with arms spread wide, is now iconic. From the temple grounds, you can see an unobstructed view of the Hiei Mountain range. Beyond the main hall lies the "root trail" where cedar roots sprawl across the ground—a mystical mountain path said to be where Yoshitsune practiced his jumping techniques. This route, which crosses to the western gate on the Kibune side, offers a truly rewarding hike.

Tips

About 30-40 minutes of steady climbing via the winding approach path to the Main Hall. From the main hall through the root trail to the western gate on the Kibune side is approximately 1 hour of mountain trail with almost no vending machines or restrooms along the way, so secure drinking water in advance. The roots and rocks can be slippery, so trekking shoes are recommended. If you're concerned about fitness, you can shortcut from Sanmon Station to Tahoto Station via cable car (200 yen donation per one-way trip).

Best time to visit

Allow about 2 hours. If you start climbing in the morning, you can traverse the mountain crossing via the root trail with time to spare.
