A Tendai Buddhist temple and headquarters representing Ohara in Kyoto. The moment you step into the grounds surrounded by cedar groves and moss, the very air changes. Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, which houses the national treasure Amida Triad, is an Heian-period structure with a distinctive boat-shaped ceiling. Throughout the moss gardens and Yuseigyoen Garden that surround it, child jizo statues are scattered—some resting their cheeks, others smiling—making exploration feel like a treasure hunt children can enjoy. From the guest hall, you can rest while viewing the Syuhekien Garden, allowing grandparents to tour at a comfortable pace. The temple transforms with each season—spring cherry blossoms, early summer hydrangeas, and autumn foliage—offering the soothing tranquility of mountain village scenery no matter when you visit.

Tips

From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto Bus Route 17 for approximately one hour to Ohara bus stop. From there, it's about a 10-minute uphill walk along the approach path beside the Yokawa River. The site is especially less crowded early in the morning during peak foliage season. While there are stone steps in the temple grounds, walking at a leisurely pace puts grandparents at ease. Tea shops and souvenir stores line the approach path, allowing for rest breaks along the way.
